The Nikobus integrated home system is called a semi-centralised system.

It primarily consists of a few modules (switch module, roll-down shutter module and dimmer controller). These modules are standalone. An installation with only one such module can be considered as a centralised system. Indeed, all intelligence is housed in the module itself. There is no intelligence in the pushbuttons.
If however a number of modules are connected together in an installation via the bus, then the intelligence is distributed among the various output modules. Each output module only has the necessary intelligence to control its own outputs. Every output module can be considered as a small controller. An installation can thus have a number of controllers.
When one of the output modules (small controller) fails, the rest of the installation can still work.

The Lutron integrated home system can also be put under the heading of semi-centralised systems, as separate output modules are used that house the intelligence for their own outputs.
