In the washroom of a single-family home new lamps were installed around 1970 (Fig. 3.15). The new luminaires were refurbished with electronic starters in their very early days. Since then, one of the lamps has been replaced once and the other one never ever. Neither has any of the starters, of course.

At least this is what you would hope for. In fact, the luminaire is fed with AC, and whether the instantaneous current value at the instance of ignition, that is, of contact opening, is high enough right at that moment to generate a sufficiently high voltage impulse is an open question.

Since before the invention of the incandescent light bulb, lighting in the home has been accomplished by the use of point light sources. As candlelight and gas lamps transitioned to electrical lighting, room light sources continued to be localized, either as light fixtures in the ceiling, or as lamps or accent lighting located for specific uses like reading or security lighting.

Until recently, the main point of discord in the climate debate surrounded the opposition of investing in fossil fuels as opposed to investing in renewable sources. Since the Fukushima accident in 2011, the discussion has shifted towards the merit of investing in nuclear against investing in renewables, with the potential side-effects of nuclear technologies overshadowing the potential externalities of carbon emissions in the public debate.
