Comprehensive paper or article regarding Energy Efficiency

I would like to ask you whether you can suggest me a comprehensive paper or article regarding Energy Efficiency, the costs $$ versus benefits $$ of implementing such programs, for the Utilities and Costumers. Or perhaps you can contact me with the person who might help me.

Dear Francisco,

It may not be easy to find such a comprehensive report.

I would like to raise the issue of the complexity of energy efficiency with a report that provides a great picture and analysis.

I am not sure of the exact purpose you want the information for, but this may be of some help.

We have a series of savings potentials in our website with some information on specific cases that could be useful for you.

Furthermore, I would like to mention to you a report from the IEA regarding energy efficiency experiences in IEA countries.

hope this is of good use for you!

Sergio

PS - The answer remains open and I believe you could write encyclopedias on the subject without being finished.

1. Electricity is the basic infrastructure of today’s development. Bangladesh is having huge shortage since 2005/2006

There are 2 types of Electricity shortage depending on timing.

  • Peak-hour (Evening)-shortage-, which mainly affects residential and other Users. 6PM-11PM
  • Off-Peak-hour-shortage- Day time shortage which affects Industries, Offices and other users. Timing other than Peak Hour.

“Cut your coat according to your cloth”. Today whole world is running after economizing Energy.  electricity use. Lets be a part of this race. Even in Holy Quran it is written “One who misuses is Satan’s brother”.

2. The cost of electricity generation and delivering to consumer point is around US $0.078 per KWHr whereas Utilities charge around US $k.0.50 per KWHr. So roughly loss per Unit is US $ 0.028. As such Utilities need to further raise electricity tariff.

3. Our income is not increasing in that ratio. So we need to save electricity for following benefits.

  • It will save our electricity bill. At least 25% electric bill will be saved.
  • House hold equipment will last more.
  • Load shedding will be minimized.
  • Electricity saved through economic measures can be used by other productive users.
  • Our Domestic consumption is around 40%. Assuming 20% saving, we can reduce our Peak demand or Load shedding by at least 400 MW.
  • Country as a whole will be benefited.

4. Lowever your electric bill, save money and energy

Let’s have an idea about electricity units and consumption and its cost.

A 100 watt bulb when used for 10 hours consumes One Kilowatt hour or 1 Unit of electricity (100 watt x 10 hours= 1000 watt hours=1 Kilowatt hour =1 Unit of electricity consumed)

For Domestic Consumer, 1 Unit at 2ND slab- US $ 0.51  including VAT.

For Commercial Consumer, 1 Unit – Tk. 0.87 including VAT

5. How to save energy, money & minimize load shedding

The following measures if adopted properly will save at least 25% of your electric bill.

  • Switch off the lights, TV, Computer, Fans, Air conditioner etc when not in use or when you go out the room.
  • Avoid use of lights in daytime. Use sunlight as much possible.
  • Use light color paints/distempers on walls. It economizes electricity.
  • Normal incandescent lamps consume 90% electricity for heating and 10% for illumination, so avoid it.
  • For lights used more than 4 hours a day, use Fluorescent or Compact Fluorescent lamps (CFL) or Energy Saving Lamps. It will save more than 60% electricity cost. Again they come with at least 1 year warranty. But always buy Good quality CFL.
  • There will be less heat emission in CFL leading to less Green house effect. In Australia, England etc all normal bulbs are being replaced by CFL.
  • Regularly clean Lights, Tube lights, reflectors etc. It will give more illumination with same bulb.
  • Use Electronic Ballasts in Tube lights.
  • Check electric wiring and specially grounding regularly.
  • Fans and regulators should be regularly serviced.
  • Use Dimmers as much possible.
  • Keep Computers in standby mode or off when not in use.
  • Always Iron clothes in bulk.It will economize electricity use.
  • Don’t keep hot food in refrigerators.
  • Keep refrigerator, Deep freeze well ventilated.
  • For cooking Use microwave ovens instead of normal ovens.
  • When using Washing machines or Dish washer use it with Full load of clothes or Crockery. Again try to dry clothes in the sun.
  • Avoid unnecessary opening of Electric Oven and refrigerator’s door.
  • Air conditioners and Geysers consume maximum electricity. Use Airconditioner with fan to save electricity.
  • Check and clean or replace the filter of air conditioner every month. Dirty filter blocks air flow through cooling system.
  • For heating system, regularly check furnace filter and clean as required, which will also lengthen its life.
  • Keep the temperature of Water heater or geysers as low as possible. Use it with Thermostat and timer control. Geyser and its piping should be leak proof.
  • Government should discourage or impose BAN on manufacture or import of Incandescent lamps and other less efficient electric equipments like Fans, Refrigerators, electric motors etc. Alternately Taxes may be increased on such items.
  • Always buy Energy efficient household and other Electric items. Use multiple door Refrigerators. Again it should have energy star rating, i.e. consume less electricity for same cooling.

6. Motivation to use less electricity

Motivation is a key to success in today’s management. People are required to make understand that we are having shortage of electricity. Public might think they are paying genuinely, so why they should not be provided with adequate supply.

Well if we are convinced and motivated about electricity saving and minimizing Load shedding, then we should follow these guidelines and motivate or convince others to follow it. If people in Europe, America can do it, then why can’t we?
Proper and continuous motivation can reduce Consumption by 20-30% or more.

7. Conclusion

Remember. A PENNY SAVED IS A PENNY EARNED. A MEGAWATT OF ELECTRICITY SAVED IS LIKE AN EXTRA MEGAWATT OF ELECTRICITY GENERATED & 1 MEGAWATT OF ELECTRICITY GENERATION COST US $ 0.57 Million  AND 3 YEARS OF CONSTRUCTION COST FOR THE SAME.

Let’s help each other to solve Electricity shortage problem and build a prosperous Bangladesh.

It impresses me lately that so many countries continue to use oil as the main means of generating electricity. The following Web site suggests a very viable alternative to polluting sources of electricity. This also means that electricity can be generated in decentralized, local applications--at a village level.

I work primarily with water and solid waste. We treat and reuse wastewater, desalinate sea water and convert waste-to-energy. All of these technologies provide sustainable solutions to energy and essential resource distribution (water, housing, food).

So, take a look at that site (www.SolarDishEngine.com) and see what could be.
