Infrastructure Performance Remains a Priority for Data Centers
• Globally, more than half (54%) of the organizations installing new copper cabling would invest in Category 6A 10Gb/s solutions - its high-performance and reliability are key for virtualization and consolidation, which are the main drivers of green and cost-reduction strategies and are highly dependent on reliability. Airports (86%) and healthcare (71%) are the business sectors leading the drive toward investment in Category 6A 10G copper solutions.

IF YOU want to save money, cut the cord. In these difficult times ever more Americans are heeding this advice and dropping their telephone landlines in favour of mobile phones (see article). Despite some of the flakiest mobile-network coverage in the developed world, one in four households has now gone mobile-only. At current rates the last landline in America will be disconnected sometime in 2025.

Driving up the efficiency of motor based applications through improved control
The European sales market forecast for integral horsepower (750W and above) motors is dominated by AC motors. Sales of these motors represent 96% (or over 9 million) of all units sold, of which 87% consists of 3-phase AC induction motors.
The market for efficient motors in the EU has seen a significant transformation and demand, following the introduction of the CEMEP/EU agreement, where the lowest efficient motor of the three classifications have since been virtually withdrawn from the market.

BHP bullish on emerging markets
However, the mining group said it was encouraged by the brighter outlook emerging from developing markets in recent months, particularly in China and India, where there was evidence customers were re-stocking commodities.

Hudson Exploration Program Delineates Three High Grade Rare Earth Drill Targets
ST40 - is a well-defined radiometric anomaly measuring approximately 1000m by 250m. At the heart of the anomaly, nine sub-crop rock samples were collected within an area measuring 125m by 100m. Seven of the samples produced assays ranging from 2.5% to 5.3% TREO. The seven samples averaged 1.8% Nd2O5 (neodymium oxide) and 417ppm Eu2O3, (europium oxide) which are atypically high amounts for REE projects. The REE distribution of lanthanides for the seven sub-crop samples are: neodymium 46% greater than cerium 20% greater than praseodymium 8% greater than lanthanum 5%. The neodymium levels are highly elevated compared with typical levels of 10% to 15% found in other deposits. The minerals hosting these elements are currently being investigated.
Neodymium is one of the more valuable rare earths, as it is a key component in neodymium-iron-boron super magnets used in motors for wind turbines, hybrid cars, and other green technologies. Neodymium oxide currently trades for approximately US$15/kg. Similarly, europium is amongst the least abundant of the rare-earth elements and is a critical component in flat panel display technology. Europium oxide currently trades for around US$500/kg.
Two rock samples located 1000m and 1400m west of ST40 (roughly half way between ST40 and ST1) averaged 0.9% TREO. These samples are intriguing because they also contain an average of 1.4% niobium oxide (Nb2O5). This area is predominantly under cover but warrants further exploration to determine potential continuity of mineralization between the two prospects. Niobium oxide currently trades for approximately US$25/kg.

Water - Water Supply & Sanitation
More than 1.1 billion people lack access to safe water, and 2.6 billion lack access to basic sanitation. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) include a target to halve the fraction of the world’s population without access to water and sanitation by 2015. The world is roughly on course to reach the target for water supply, but will fall short by half a billion people in sanitation.

DPG’s unique fiber optic technology (might) replaces copper wire in military aircraft and simulators
“DPG’s Optical Harness™ technology is a direct replacement for the wiring harnesses used on today’s aircraft, and does not require replacing the aircraft’s existing systems,” says Dr. John Husaim, CEO of Defense Photonics Group. “By using fiber optic technology, DPG can reduce copper wire harness weight by more than 50 percent. In addition, the technology incorporates multiple signals and formats on a single optical fiber using a single laser diode. Fiber optic systems provide immunity to electromagnetic and radio interference, making aircraft less susceptible to potentially catastrophic lightning strikes or dangerous electromagnetic pulses (EMP).”

Inherently fault current limiting ( IFCL ) superconductor cable
The technology is capable of carrying 10 times as much power as copper wires of the same size, while also being able to automatically adapt to power surges and disruptions from lightning strikes, heat waves, and traffic accidents, even sabotage. A single superconductor cable can replace 12 copper cable bundles, freeing up more space underground for other utility needs like water, natural gas, or phone service.

Qwest starts competing with next-gen Broadband
Until a few weeks ago, Comcast’s competition in this area (Qwest) has done nothing to push out next-generation speeds on their infrastructure. In Denver and other areas they had deployed “fiber optic” ADSL2+ (copper for the last several thousand feet) with less-than-next-generation results: download speeds that realistically topped out at about 17 Mbps, and uploads that wouldn’t get past 720 kbps (kilobits per second).

New Mixed Rare Earth Permanent Magnet Material Shows Promise
Recently I came across a May 2009 presentation published by the US Department of Energy’s [DoE] Ames Lab, on a new mixed rare earth-based [MRE-Fe-B] permanent magnet [PM] alloy, for high temperature applications.
The work forms part of the DoE’s multi-year FreedomCAR project, with a number of specific goals:
* Production of magnet materials for PM motors, capable of operating at 150-200 °C [300-390 °F] and for up to 15 years;

US makes largest single investment in battery technology
US President Barack Obama announced on Wednesday a $2.4 billion investment in next generation batteries and electric vehicles.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) will fund 48 projects in over 20 states to accelerate the manufacture of batteries and electric drive components and the deployment of electric vehicles.
The funds, which will be awarded through the Department of Energy (DOE), will be matched by a further $2.4 billion in cost share from the recipients.
The awards include:
* $1.5 billion to US manufacturers to produce batteries and increase recycling capability;
* $500 million to US manufacturers to produce electric drive components for vehicles;
* $400 million to purchase plug-in and all-electric vehicles for test demonstrations and deployment, as well as for education and workforce training. -
Desalination plant design addressing green concerns
Dubai: The International Desalination Association president is confident that existing water purifying technologies in the UAE are adequately mitigating desalination impacts on the marine environment.
Likewise, seawater quality affected by oil spills or red tide has not hindered water security, said Lisa Henthorne, chief technology officer from Water Standard and President of the International Desalination Association (IDA).
