Below is a list of (free of charge) forums that exist for interaction among energy professionals that you may find useful:

  • PowerGlobe: a highly active message board (about 3-5 posts in a typical day) of over 2000 professionals. There is some focus on the academic community, with a lot of announcements of calls for papers for conferences and journals and new openings for academic posts. But also questions about new technologies, simulation tools, announcements of new publications, ...
  • Engineering Tips: a number of highly active forums. For example the 'Electric Power Engineering' forum has 30,000 members. Information is of a very practical nature.
  • IEEE Communities: a number of highly functional forums on power engineering, sustainable energy, safety, engineering management, ... Activity is rather limited, but occasional, one can find a gem of information.
  • The IET: The Institution of Engineering and Technology has several message boards on power. Sometimes, discussion is very active, though the subjects are naturally focussed on UK.

All of the above forums are free of charge, but require registration. They're also free of comment spam, and when discussion takes place, it is usually of good quality.

If we missed something major, please let me know.

This is my first post at Leonardo (Became a member just few mins. back). This is a very good initiative and I am confident that innumerable professionals will benefit from this.

I share similar views on sharing knowledge for free. This is the only way we can continuously increase the knowledge across all sections and build an easy access knowledge base. In these days of reduced interest among young engineers to take up power engineering as a career, such initiatives will go a long way in attracting good talent to this area.

I would like to add one more site, a moderated peer-to-peer forum for power system protection professionals www.forum.pearlabs.com.

This site is designed to provide an easy medium to exchange knowledge among practising professionals and also to build a strong community. Eventually one day we hope to have a large, concentrated group of professionals, across various organisations, countries and cultures supporting each other.

This site is also free and requires registration with a valid e-mail ID.

Cheers

Pradeep
