Nowadays, LEDs have become very popular light sources in decorative applications. The breakthrough of LEDs in general lighting is subject of discussion between believers and non-believers.
In order to evaluate the possibilities of these light sources properly, a full understanding of this technology is required. Elementary solid state physics and the relationship with basic characteristics (current, voltage) are briefly explained. Optical characteristics are discussed. Thermal and electrical characteristics are illustrated with results obtained in the laboratory. The generation of white light is an important topic. Finally some obstacles for a quick breakthrough in general lighting are identified.
