The huge potential of ocean energy is undeniable. Though in many cases increased cooperation is taking place, a coordinated approach is required to allow ocean energy to grow to the level of other integrated renewable energy sources such as wind energy. At present the ocean energy industry is in an early stage with a number of technologies under development. These technologies are making the transition from research to demonstration to market penetration with the expectation of moving up to commercial production during the next 3 to 5 years.

The European Ocean Energy Association (EU-OEA) has been established to strengthen the development of the markets and technology for ocean energy in its widest sense, covering not only on- and offshore wave energy and tidal energy but also marine current, salinity and thermal energy. The aim is to provide a forum for our members to have access to the latest industry data and to foster the growth of the ocean energy industry. The provision of such forum will facilitate the ongoing development and commercialisation efforts in the field of wave and marine current energy and related technologies.

We will:

  • conduct studies on topics identified through consultation with our members;
  • communicate with all involved actors in the emerging ocean energy industry;
  • create an information exchange database;
  • raise the profile of ocean energy at a EU-wide level;
  • formulate a road map for policies;
  • support our members in dealing with EU institutions, programmes and policies;
  • provide training, education, information on financing sources;
  • sollicit active participation of financing institutions.
