xxxxxx | Energy efficiency is said to be "the cheapest form of energy we can get" and a great opportunity towards sustainability and environmental protection. Efficient and clean technology is many times available and needs to be leveraged. The objective of this project is to allow easy access to knowledge and to facilitate the development of new initiatives developing, delivering or promoting energy efficient technology. |
Could CCS be a dead-end?
Submitted by Hans Nilsson on Tue, 2007-04-10 07:00.
There is a lot of hope to CCS as a solution to especially coal-fired power. But are these hopes in vain? There is evidence from experiments of CO2-injection that so called rapid mineral dissolution could create path-ways for the CO2 to escape back into atmosphere. And worse, on its way create toxic chemical reactions that could even affect ground-water. Certainly these experiments show that there is a risk that should not be under-estimated and that not all underground sites are useful.
It is interesting to note that representatives from South Africa, who really could use CCS, at a recent workshop in Johannesburg saw CCS as "not the answer but an interim solution".
In some comments made it has been claimed that the CO2 does not have to be stored forever but it would be enough with 5000-10000 years before it leaked back!
