Will George W. Bush save the polar-bears?
By Hans Nilsson / Published on Mon, 2006-09-18 05:10The success of Al Gore's book and film "An Inconvenient Truth" can hardly be more obvious than if his opponent from the presidential election 1998, George W. Bush, will change his mind about climate change issues, and he may do so. There are signs that he is preparing a U-turn probably inspired not only by his old rival but also by his patriot in politics, the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has made far-reaching commitments and acts as a front-runner. If the president changes his mind he will soon find himself in a crowd of celebrities of which some are also latter day converts.
A community that might be the first to congratulate him if he does is the polar-bears. Their homeland, the Arctic Ice, is already shrinking and their hunting season has been affected negatively. NASA studies have shown visually in pictures, for quite some time, the shrinking of the ice-cap over the North Pole, which is worrying enough, but recent studies shows that the speed of this decline is accelerating. Since the recoding began in the 80's the melting-rate has been 0.15% per year but the last 2 years increased to 6% per year!! If George does not act we may have polar-bears only on the zoo within soon.
