Distribution System Operators are facing increasing pressure to reduce costs while confronted with a need to maintain or improve the quality and reliability of supply. Furthermore, network losses represent more and more a burden, due to higher energy prices and growing demand.
This presentation gives an overview of the size sources and types of losses, pointing out some solutions to reduce them. Both technical and non-technical losses are analysed, indicating the main origin of these losses.
Even if there are a number of other alternatives to reduce losses, distribution transformers represent the biggest opportunity for action, as the savings potential is documented and can be achieved with considerably simple technical solutions. The policies for reducing the losses in distribution transformers and the economic aspects associated with purchasing are addressed in the presentation.
Additionally, a brief analysis of the regulatory incentives for investment in efficiency is also presented.
