Eco-sheet: a 22 kW motor running at half load saves 19 tonnes of CO2e emissions

Improving the efficiency of a 22 kW motor - 50% loaded by 3% reduces lifetime emissions for CO2 by almost 19 tonnes, as shown in a new eco-sheet developed using the ecodesign toolbox for motors, transformers and cables. Efficiency improvement equally improves environmental performance for other impact categories.

The CO2 invested in materials to make the motors more efficient is gained back a thousand times during the lifetime, reducing the energy payback (the time period during which energy invested in the motor manufacturing is gained back through electricity savings) to a single week.

The eco-design toolbox consists of a series of flexible, non-linear models for fast-turnaround lifecycle impact assessment of motors, transformers and cables, allowing comparison of up to three different alternatives. The toolbox is based on the GABI tool and database.
