Economical Damage due to Low Power Quality

By I Zhezhelenko et al

This paper presents a method to determine the power quality costs caused by reliability decreasing of electrical equipment due to accelerated insulation aging. The proposed algorithm allows incorporating the characteristics of power quality into existing methods for modeling of repairable and aging failures. With such approach to estimating the power quality costs the continuous development of electricity supply system, growth of demands of the power quality aggravating loads and irreversibility of insulation aging process are accounted. The main reasons of huge damages in most developed countries associated with the low power quality are discussed. Some of potential benefits from power quality improving are analyzed. Expressions for derating factors needed to prevent premature failure of electrical equipment at low power quality are provided. The application of proposed method to comparative analysis of the different power quality solutions is demonstrated.
