Innovative solution for village power
By Hans De Keulenaer / Published on Sat, 2006-09-30 16:08There are 2 billion people without access to electricity, but for villages located near to transmission lines, there is now an innovative solution, developed by the Montefiore Institute of the University of Liege, Belgium. The Makola village electrification is working perfectly since more than 4 years in deep sub-saharan Africa, with almost no maintenance and completely managed by local authorities. It gives acces to electricity to a very poor village of 1000 inhabitants (167 families) in a virgin forest.
The 50 kVA system has changed the life of the villagers, providing following energy services:
-
pump for water distribution (3.5 kW)
-
140 W per household for 2 light bulbs + radio (23.4 kW)
-
16 televisions (1.2 kW)
-
12 refrigerators (2.2 kW)
-
Public lighting (8.5 kW)
-
Cool medicin storage (3.5 kW)
-
Church light + sound (0.6 kW)
-
Crafts (5 kW)
