Powerplant in Puertollano
By Hans De Keulenaer / Published on Sat, 2006-10-07 21:20In the future, coal-fired power plants could operate with hardly any pollution emissions. With the integrated coal gasification (IGCC) technique, coal is converted to a gas which is then burned in a gas turbine. Pollutants are either not produced at all, or they are extracted before combustion occurs. Carbon dioxide could be separated and stored in underground caverns. IGCC technology can make a significant contribution to a safe and very environmentally-friendly and climate-compatible power supply.
The picture shows the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant built by Siemens in the Spanish city of Puertollano.
