Ranking the world's largest PV plants

State of affairs as of 01/01/11

In 2007, Leonardo Energy reported the inauguration of the 11 MW PV plant in Serpa, Portugal. For a short time, it was the world’s largest plant of its kind. Four years later however, it has dropped to 94th place in the world ranking.

This shows just how fast the market of solar energy has been evolving in recent years.
The current top five are as follows:

  1. Sarnia, Ontario, Canada: 97 MWp
  2. Montalto di Castro, Italy: 84 MWp
  3. Finsterwalde, Germany: 81 MWp
  4. Rovigo, Italy: 70 MWp
  5. Olmedilla, Spain: 60 MWp

Note that this ranking is according the capacity in MW-peak. The ranking by estimated annual yield however, while including the same facilities, provides a somewhat different order:

  1. Montalto di Castro, Italy: 140 GWh/year
  2. Sarnia, Canada: 120 GWh/year
  3. Rovigo, Italy: 95 GWh/year
  4. Olmedilla, Spain: 87 GWh/year
  5. Finsterwalde, Germany: 81 GWh/year

The production figures of Montalto di Castro and Sarnia are based on the estimates of project owners (SMA Solar Technology and First Solar). The figure for Olmedilla is from actual production data. The figures for Rovigo and Finsterwalde are calculated from typical capacity factors for the respective regions (0.15 for Northern Italy and 0.11 for North-eastern Germany).
