Smart Domestic Appliances Provide Flexibility for Sustainable Energy Systems

By HDK / Published on Tue, 2009-06-09 12:18

In partnership with the Smart-A project.

Smart Domestic Appliances in Sustainable Energy Systems (Smart-A)” develops strategies for an intelligent operation of domestic appliances, which contributes to load management in future energy systems. Therefore, the project assesses the options for load shifting by a variety of appliances across Europe and evaluates them against the Demand Side Management requirements of future energy systems, which will feature large shares of variable wind and solar power production.

Counting one's blessings

By Hans De Keulenaer / Published on Mon, 2009-02-23 08:10

A home owner in The Netherlands bought and moved into a house. After 3 months, he checked the electrical installation (he has an engineering background) and counts his blessings. The picture shows a connection box for a washing machine which was a ticking time bomb. It was only a matter of time before the poor connection caused a fire, for example when the washing machine is running at night and residents are sleeping.

When seeing this picture, I immediately agreed within my own family not to run the washing machine or dryer when we're out of the house.

Part 11: National Promotion for Energy Efficient Home Appliances

By Angelo Baggini / Published on Wed, 2008-12-10 10:00 Year: 2007
Policy Status: In force

The Energy-Efficient Household Appliance Promotion Forum (provisional name) was established with the aim of further promoting the widespread use of energy-efficient household appliances (e.g. air conditioners, refrigerators, lighting) as a national movement through collaboration with concerned parties, including household appliance manufacturers/retailers and consumer groups.

Driven by its members, the forum will be engaged in the rollout of campaigns to promote energy-efficient household appliances, the wider provision of information on such appliances, the development of domestic energy saving diagnosis tools, and the co-hosting of the "Energy Saving Contest".

Part 06: New Labelling Measures: 2005 Revised Energy Conservation Law

By Angelo Baggini / Published on Mon, 2008-11-24 10:00 Year: 2006
Policy Status: In force

The 2005 revision of the Energy Conservation Law introduced new and reinforced labelling provisions for appliances. Labels must now contain information on the appliance's expected electricity cost or fuel usage information. The new comparative rating system is presented as five-star rating, and provides consumers with the information needed to compare across products in the same category. Fuel or electricity cost information is now required for three designated products: air conditioners, electric refrigerators and TV sets.

Use of labels indicating energy efficiency levels for other appliances are to be provided on a voluntary basis. However the revised Energy Conservation Law makes it necessary for retailers to make efforts to provide information concerning energy conservation features of products. Certain products have labels indicating both energy conservation standard achievement and expected annual electricity bill and annual fuel usage (Electric freezers, lights, electric toilet seats, gas cooking appliances, gas and oil water heaters). Computers, magnetic disk units, space heaters and transformers can be labelled according to energy conservation standard, while electric rice cookers, microwave ovens, video casette and DVD recorders are covered by expected annual electricity bill and annual fuel usage labels.

Part 01: Comprehensive Energy Labeling Program for Appliances

By Angelo Baggini / Published on Thu, 2008-11-13 10:00 Year: 2006
Policy Status: In force

In 2006, India pledged to launch a comprehensive energy labeling program for appliances under the framework of the Energy Conservation Act of 2001. The Indian Bureau of Energy Efficiency's long-planned labeling program first addressed refrigerators and fluorescent tube lamps. The rating grade models on their energy efficiency, starting from one star, implying low energy efficiency, to a five star grade for the most energy efficient model.

Energy labels became mandatory for many electricity-consuming appliances in 2007, including pumps, motors, air conditioners and televisions. The BEE plans to coordinate a consumer education campaign to publicize the new labels.

Part 06: Efficiency Upgrade for Appliance Production and Public Lighting

By Angelo Baggini / Published on Thu, 2008-10-23 09:00

Year: 2006
Policy Status: In force

Aiming to reduce electricity consumption by 29 billion kilowatt-hours over the 11th Five-Year Period, China has mandated the:

  • promotion of high-efficiency lighting systems and three-primary-color phosphorous in public facilities, hotels, shopping centers, office buildings, and sports venues
  • the renovation of production and assembly lines of high-efficiency electronic appliances.

In 2004, lighting required 13% of China's total power. As stated by the National Development and Reform Commission, 70 to 80%t of power can be saved by replacing ordinary incandescent lamps with high-efficiency energy-saving fluorescent lamps and 20 to 30 percent can be saved by replacing traditional electromagnetic ballasts with electronic ballasts. In traffic lights, 90 percent of power used can be saved by replacing incandescent lamps with light emitting diodes (LEDs).

Part 04: Appliance Standards: Harmonisation with Energy Star and California Standards for Commercial Freezers and Refrigerators

By Angelo Baggini / Published on Mon, 2008-10-20 09:00 Year 2006
Policy Status In force

In January 2006, Natural Resources Canada's (NRCan's) Office of Energy Efficiency proposed to amend Canada's Energy Efficiency Regulations to require dealers of self-contained, commercial refrigerators and freezers imported or shipped interprovincially for sale or lease in Canada to comply with minimum energy performance standards.
NRCan aims to eventually harmonize Canadian efficiency and certification standards with those of Energy Star and California. To this end, NRCan proposed a new testing procedure commercial refrigerators and freezers and new efficiency verification and reporting procedures.

Part 03: Appliance Standards: Harmonization with Energy Star and California Standards for Beverage Vending Machines

By Angelo Baggini / Published on Sat, 2008-10-18 09:00 Year: 2006
Policy Status: In force

In October 2005, Natural Resources Canada proposed to regulate the energy efficiency levels of bottled and canned beverage vending machines to the ENERGY STAR Tier 1 levels - thereby harmonizing with the efficiency standards of California Energy Commission. The California levels were chosen rather than those of CSA C804-96 because the market data available to NRCan indicate that regulating to the CSA standard would have little effect on the market, since the major manufacturers are already working toward the more stringent California standard which took effect on 1 January 2006.

NRCan also proposed to regulate solid/opaque-front vending machines to the ENERGY STAR Tier 2 levels effective January 1, 2008, since 99 percent of the latest models of solid/opaque-front vending machines already meet the ENERGY STAR Tier 1 levels.

Can LED lighting deliver?

By Stefan Fassbinder / Published on Wed, 2008-09-03 18:32

Incandescent lamps are cheap but tend to have short lifetimes. The light emitted by incandescent sources is perceived as particularly pleasant because these hot radiators generate a continuous (or full) emission spectrum. But this very fact means that they waste much of the electrical energy supplied to them. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are actually the least compact of all the various lamps commercially available at present (Figure 1).
