The Vienna-based Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) announced on May 8, 2009 the winners of its 7th project funding cycle. In a highly competitive process, 49 projects in 25 countries were selected for funding out of a total of 694 project concepts received from around the world.
In a move to support and give further momentum to the European Commission efforts towards energy efficiency, the Energy Efficiency Industry Forum has put forward a position paper highlighting the role of energy efficiency in energy security.
The EU-Asia Power Quality Initiative (APQI) was launched on September 19 in Beijing. As a project implemented by the International Copper Association (China) and co-funded by the European Commission's Asia-Invest program, APQI is geared to help China improve quality management for its electric power in order to facilitate energy saving, emission reduction, as well as companies' competitiveness. The project will also cover other Asian countries, including India, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, as well as the Philippines.

The quality of power supply is an increasingly complex and topical domain. The growing demand for electricity, the development of power electronics, and the increasing susceptibility of equipment have made power quality (PQ) an issue of major concern to industry and business. Many professionals are confronted with PQ issues on a daily basis.
The complete PQ spectrum
The Handbook of Power Quality tackles the complete spectrum of the PQ domain:
The modern process industry is heavily dependant on electrical equipment that is very sensitive to supply disturbances. These disturbances may result in production outages, which can have a severe economical impact.
The impact of power supply disturbances on production processes can be extremely dangerous in the micro-processor manufacturing industry. Here, interruptions of any kind have the potential to be economically disastrous, so much so in fact that power quality and a reliable power supply have become critical to business success.
Solutions are widely available, even if finding the best one can be a difficult task for engineers.
ABB have developed a useful predictive reliability model that simulates expected plant behavior and quantifies the impact of improvement options. Using this model, ABB identifies the combination of measures that will yield the highest level of reliability for the lowest possible cost.
The World Energy Congress organised in Rome, Italy (11-15 November 2007) included a session on the role of International Standards, in collaboration with the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
It provided an overview of the key role that International Standards can play in supporting the development and promotion of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.
International Standards were recognised as part of the solution to today’s energy issues for the following reasons:
they help avoid unnecessary technical barriers to trade which might result from national and regional policies
they are essential for creating global markets for efficient energy technologies and for disseminating good energy management practice
they provide common metrics for defining and measuring energy performance so that investment decisions and incentives may be targeted to encourage energy efficiency
they support scientific cooperation and the harmonization of public policies.
Paul Waide, from the International Energy Agency (IEA), presented a joint IEA-ISO Position Paperon the issue, which was used as background material for the 2007 G8 Meeting.
The ISO Secretary-General, Alan Bryden, and the IEC President, Renzo Tani, outlined the work their organisations are doing in order to promote the goal of a sustainable energy future in this interdependent world.
Born from the experience of Leonardo's award winningLeonardo Power Quality Initiative, on April 11th, the new Handbook of Power Quality will be available worldwide, published by Wiley.
The book uses the perspectives of both power suppliers and electricity users, with contributions from experts in all aspects of PQ providing a balance of scientific and practical information on:

Leonardo ENERGY launches a new collection of downloadable Application Notes concerning distributed generation and renewable energy sources aimed at professionals in the energy sector.
Individual notes provide detailed and practical information on the most commonly applied techniques, including wind, solar, small hydropower and CHP. Other notes give an introduction to the subject, guidance on interconnection and policy issues and a case study. The material is produced by experts and covers technical and economic considerations.

" It's not even very difficult", says Lars Christensen, founder and director of the Inventor's Consortium PL Brake. Inventors from PL Brake have been aware of the counter-flow hazard for quite a long time, and in 2001 started a development project capable of rendering such drivers “hors de combat”. The system could have prevented the recent tragic accident - which made two small children orphans - had the system been in use on Danish motorways.
The RETScreen Clean Energy Project Analysis Software recently passed the 100,000 users milestone. Mr. Dermot Gibbons of the Kinspan Group plc, a building products manufacturer headquartered in Ireland, was officially the 100,000th registered user.
RETScreen is experiencing exponential growth with demand for the software now expanding at more than 500 new users every week. RETScreen is used in 217 countries, lead by Canada (27,613), with the following countries rounding out the top 20: United States (12,891);
Leonardo Power Quality Initiative (LPQI), the award winning education and training programme, has published its 28th Power Quality Application Note covering Flicker, written by Prof Z Hanzelka and Dr A Bien from AGH University of Science and Technology in Poland.
The 4EM project was launched in Brussels on January 24-25th, with the aim of promoting the Motor Challenge Programme in the new member states and candidate countries. The project will raise energy efficiency awareness of policy makers and industry in the area through:
