Why use a frequency inverter along with an electric motor?

By Stefan Fassbinder / Published on Wed, 2009-08-19 08:08

An electric motor and an electricity generator are basically the same. By principle, any electric motor can also generate electricity. Electric drives are way ahead of combustion engines, since, unfortunately, a car engine which sucks up exhaust fumes during braking and downhill rides and converts them into fuel and fresh air is still pending. The electric motor can deliver this, although during its first century of existence, its use has largely been hampered by two basic drawbacks:

Electromagnetic Coupling of the Electrical Drive – EMC (Part II)

By Hans De Keulenaer / Published on Mon, 2008-09-22 10:00

The paper deals with the general analysis of one part of the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC ) problem — the electromagnetic coupling applied in the field of power electrical systems as. The simulation analyses and practical measurements of the electromagnetic coupling are presented in part II . Obtained results confirm the correctness of the theoretical analyses and so they can be used for predictive stating of EMC quality of individual new electrotechnical products.

Three-level Modulation Techniques to Reduce Instantaneous Common Mode Voltage in Induction Machines

By Hans De Keulenaer / Published on Tue, 2008-05-06 14:33

Problems on inverter motor drives such as bearing currents are introduced due to common mode voltages. Different solutions are proposed on literature, for two-level or multilevel inverter. Instantaneous zero common mode voltage by using a three-level inverted could be achieved. This paper proposes a commutation strategy that allows zero common mode voltage by using medium vectors, and also a new representation as a plane on the commutation space is defined which is called zero common mode voltage plane. On this defined plane, every turning vector fulfil this property.

Active Compensation of Harmonics in Industrial Applications

By Hans De Keulenaer / Published on Wed, 2008-02-13 18:03

By S Kalaschnikow et al

In industrial low and medium voltage mains, passive filters and PFC capacitors have traditionally been used to improve the supply quality. However, they cannot be rated only for the loads being compensated. They are affected by harmonic currents from other non-linear loads or by harmonics from the power system [1]. Compared with passive element compensators, an active harmonic compensator (AHC) can be used to improve the supply quality without worrying about all the problems associated with applying passive elements.

An assessment of distortions of supply voltage waveform in All-Electric Ship Power Network - Case Study

By Hans De Keulenaer / Published on Tue, 2007-10-23 12:43

By M Szweda et al

This paper deals with problems of electric power quality evaluation in ship’s network. The measurements of voltage waveform distortion have been carried out on an all electric ship – a research vessel equipped with electric propulsion comprising AC active front end (AFE) drives. The exemplary results of experimental research have been shown and compared with current requirements of Standards and Rules concerning power quality in ships’ networks.
