Intelligent E-Transportation Management

By HDK / Published on Fri, 2010-01-15 16:35

This paper describes the performance of the network of a typical future residential concept area, as has been studied in the Intelligent E-Transportation Management project. Several scenarios have been elaborated by load flow simulations. The study investigated what level of introduction of electric vehicles, heat pumps, photovoltaic systems and micro combined heat and power plants is feasible in this network. Possible overload situations are examined and the opportunities of demand side management for the power grid are investigated.

What percentage of the electricity will be generated by distributed energy sources by 2050, i.e. power plants less than 10 MW?

By Hans De Keulenaer / Published on Wed, 2009-09-02 11:21

From the World Energy Investment Outlook 2008 it becomes clear the energy sector will have to play a central role in tackling climate change. The key issue, curbing CO2 emissions, can be done through major improvements in efficiency combined with rapid switching to renewables. Renewables can be central organised (like hydropower plants, large wind farms, co-firing of biomass, CSP) but also decentral (PV, local biomass, micro CHP, local renewable heat sources). Another solution to reduce emissions will be to implement carbon capture and storage (CCS) and continue to use fossil fuels.

Report - Renewables Support Schemes and Grid Integration Policies

By Fernando Nuno / Published on Tue, 2009-06-02 11:12

On the January 23, 2008 the European Commission agreed on a far-reaching package of proposals that will deliver the European Council's commitments to fight climate change and promote RE. With the publication of this Climate Action Plan and its several targets, the EU wants to show global leadership in this area.

This report provides an overview of the Kyoto-targets and the objectives of energy from RES in final energy consumption in 2020.

Distributed System for Power Quality Improvement

By HDK / Published on Wed, 2009-05-27 08:06

Based on current trends for solving complex technical problems, a new concept of power quality improvement is proposed here. It consists of creating a distributed system for improving supply conditions in a given islanding power system in, for example, geographical terms (with determined points of delivery), or as an internal installation system for an industrial consumer.

Large-Scale Integrated Smart Grids with High Penetration of Renewables and Customer Participation

By Hans De Keulenaer / Published on Mon, 2009-04-13 10:36

The evolutionary path of the U.S. electricity grid is at an historical crossroad. Decisions are going to be made about the direction of grid development so that it can meet extraordinary economic challenges, critical needs for energy security, and essential requirements for a sustainable way of life. This is a defining moment in terms of our nation’s commitment to providing an electric energy system, including the bulk transmission network, that meets societal needs of the 21st century and beyond.

15th COGEN Europe Annual Conference

By Hans De Keulenaer / Published on Mon, 2009-03-02 10:42

Europe currently faces various energy challenges and cogeneration can contribute in reaching strategic EU energy objectives, such as security of supply, CO2 emission reductions and energy efficiency. The 15th COGEN Europe Annual Conference therefore puts the theme ‘Cogeneration: a strategic energy choice for Europe’ squarely on the EU agenda.

Connecting Distributed Generation (DG) units to the network

By Bruno De Wachter / Published on Thu, 2008-07-31 05:30

Authors: David Chapman, Bruno De Wachter

An overview of possible issues for the Distribution Network Operator (DNO)

The EU has set a target of 20% renewable energy by 2020. The majority of this renewable energy will be achieved by distributed generation (DG) units connected to the LV or MV network. As a result, the distribution network operators (DNOs) will face a number of difficulties. On one hand, they must maximise access for the connection of the DG generation units, but on the other, they must maintain the established levels of power quality, availability, and reliability of the distribution network at a reasonable cost.

The connection of DG is problematic because the distribution system was designed to feed power from a relatively few large generation stations to a very large number of consumers. It was not designed to accept the feed in of energy at medium and low voltage levels.

What follows is a brief overview of basic issues that can arise when DG units, such as PV panels, wind turbines, or cogeneration units, are connected to the network.

These issues can be classified as follows:

  1. Voltage control and balance during normal operation
  2. Stability in case of incidents on power lines or generation units
  3. Network protection issues
  4. Power Quality issues
  5. Integrity of the remote control signals
