He graduated for his masters in 1987 and started working for an engineering consultancy firm in the field of acoustics and building physics. Projects mainly involved energy use and energy savings in utility buildings and houses. In 1992 he joined KEMA to become specialist in the field of fuel cells. Gradually he broadened the scope of his work to distributed generation, energy consumption, energy conservation and related grid issues. He was project manager for many projects including building decision models for goverments regarding renewable energy policies, developing a costs and benefit model for smart metering in the Netherlands and assessment of EU electricity grid design rules and planning processes with regard to distributed generation. He was co-author of the comprehensive book: Solid Oxide Fuel Cells; Fundamentals, Design and Applications (Elsevier Science, 2003), chapter 13: Systems and Applications, Lecturer for the PATO (Institute for Continuing Engineering Education, founded by the Dutch Royal Institute of Engineers) for their course "Distributed Generation" and invited lecturer for the Technical Universities of Den Bosch and Arnhem concerning energy storage and fuel cells.
